Jeff Greenberg was the winner of my Clutter Chaos Contest where I challenged people to send me pictures of the best of their worst clutter.

Here is the picture of his office desk that he sent in with his entry!

Like many of us, Jeff, and his wife, are busy people. They both work, they have two kids, a home, and all of the "stuff" that goes along with being a professional couple with a family.

The perfect solution for them was a Three Hour Transformation - the prize awarded in the Clutter Chaos Contest.

My organizing philosophy is different than many of my peers. I take a more practical organizing approach to dealing with clutter:

  • You have something that you need
  • You put it away where it belongs
  • You easily find it and get to it when you need it
  • It's easy to put back where it belongs

Here are some of the photos taken after Jeff's Three Hour Transformation...

Spacemakers, and a variety of other organizing products, some from Staples, were used to organize markers, pens, pencils, ink cartridges, paper, and other office supplies. This type of system not only gets you organized, it saves you money (you don't buy things you don't need because you can easily see your inventory!).

After an initial inventory of the room, we started putting things where they belong and where they could easily be retrieved.

A filing system that is well organized and easy to get to is critical to keeping desk space clean.

Everything has it's place and can easily be found. It can also easily be put back where it belongs. Once you get comfortable with the "system" it's actually easy to follow and stick to.

BEFORE (above): This looks like most file cabinets I see. While it might appear to be organized, actually, it is not very easy to find paperwork quickly and effectively. The idea is not just to create a clean and clutter free working desktop, but to be able to quickly and effectively get to the paperwork and information that you need.

AFTER: Color coding files with large labels... IBM "blue" folders show the information is work related.

Drop-in hanging folders that are clearly labeled make it easy to find information and then quickly put it back where it belongs. The next time you need something it's easy to find. This reduces a lot of stress and saves times.

Jeff and his wife have a lot of electronics and almost everything has its own charger or cord. We used one of my favorite products, an electronic cord organizer, and labeled each compartment and cord. Before his Three Hour Transformation these cords were shoved in a drawer and they always had to try to figure out what each one was for.
