September is Self Improvement Month
According to Chases
Calendar of Events the purpose of Self Improvement Month
is to disseminate information about the importance of lifelong learning and self
improvement.
People in offices
think of the day after Labor Day as a new beginning, second only to New Year’s
Day. Although they had resolved that this year would be better, often they
realize that it is the beginning of the 4th quarter of the year and that they
are not even close to meeting their goals.
The problem is, if
they keep doing what they are doing, they will keep getting what they are
getting.
CEO’s and managers
need to evaluate, or have their Human Resources Director evaluate, why they are not meeting
their goals and have support systems available to help them change their work
style so that they can achieve them.
Traditionally
management thinks that the answer is to have people attend a seminar on
organization, or time management. Although on paper it looks like the least
expensive way to train people, in reality these seminars are expensive and
rarely produce results because they are a “one size fits all” presentation. Many
attendees have trouble focusing on the material that is being presented because
they are thinking about the projects that they need to work on. They take notes
and then add their notes to the paper piles but say that they don’t have time to
get organized.
A more cost effective
solution is one-on-one consultations. In these sessions the consultant customizes the
organizing systems to suit a person’s work style and tasks. By working together
in a hands-on organizing session they create an action plan and see an immediate
improvement. The most valuable aspect of this approach is helping the person
think through what action they need to take on each piece of paper, or each
file.
Many executive
assistants hire a consultant and work with them and their boss to create systems
to improve the paper flow in their office.
When people have an
organized workspace, and efficient systems for paper flow and scheduling their
time, they are more productive, healthier, and happier.
September is the
month that energizes us for the last quarter of the business year. Now is the
time to give yourself, or your employees, the key to self improvement.
Now is the time to
get organized and get energized!!
