Celebrating 25 Years of Organizing Excellence
December 2007
Update:
My New Year's Resolution
In 2007 my New Year's
resolution was to simplify my life. Some of my newsletter readers agreed and
have shared their experiences with me over the year. Here's how it went:
My
incentives for simplifying my life were that in January of 2007 my husband was
retiring and I was celebrating a milestone birthday.
What
Worked: Giving me
permission to simplify my life and take time to smell the roses was the best
birthday gift. In February, I enjoyed a week in warmth and sunshine (I live in
MA) with my husband and in August I enjoyed our annual family vacation on Cape Cod. I also took more "personal days" throughout the year.
Creating
and growing passive streams of income that compliment the services that I offer
has been and continues to be exciting. Examples of this are Organizing Product
Research, “Ask the Experienced Organizer”
Telephone Consultations, and adding an
Organizing
Products page to my website. My Client Referral Program has grown. This
program is designed to meet the needs of clients who request services that I do
not provide or who are located in areas that I do not service.
I resigned
from time consuming board and committee meetings that I had to attend and now
serve only on the NAWBO (Boston Chapter) Advisory Board. This commitment is
primarily by phone or email.
What
Didn't Work So Well:
Because I spend the majority of my time out of my office, my greatest challenge
is streamlining my administrative procedures. Although building my passive
streams of income will give me more freedom in the future, they are time
consuming to develop.
What
I Learned and Adjustments I'll Make in 2008: I have learned
that when I try to do too much, I need to “walk my talk.” That is when I say to
myself “What would you tell a client to do?” and the answer gets me back on track
and focused.
My primary goal for 2008 is to streamline my administrative procedures.
I'd love
to hear your resolutions, goals and objectives.
Share them with me here.
Some More Holiday Tips:
Steps
To A Calmer Holiday Season
Here
are a few more ideas to help you take the stress out of the holidays
ahead:
Use
relaxation techniques to stay calm. Slow, deep breathing will keep
your stress responses to a minimum.
Rewarding yourself
by taking little relaxation breaks frequently throughout the day,
like a 15 minute walk, a bike ride, or simple stretching exercises
can make holiday stress melt away!
You're doing plenty already - don't try to do it all. Have more realistic
expectations of yourself and of others. Delegate and ask for help.
Decide to do less. Ask yourself, should I really be doing this? Do I really have
to do it or can someone else do it?
Break
holiday tasks into manageable segments, you’ll be less stressed than if you try
to do it all at the last minute.
Have fun!
Smile and enjoy the little things in life like a beautiful sky, fresh air, or
children waiting anxiously in line to see Santa Claus.
And
finally, remind yourself that no one is going to look to see if your baseboards
are clean. If they do, remind yourself not to sweat the small stuff!
And after
all... isn't most of it really the "small stuff?"
Have a
great holiday season!
