3rd Week In March Is Clutter Awareness Week
Many people suffer from "Clutteritis."
This condition is caused by information overload, too much ”stuff,” and too
little time.
MYTH: A cluttered
desk is a sign of a genius.
If your desk is buried in a sea of papers you are not alone. Your ingenious
ideas and most important papers may be lost under the clutter.
FACT: The Wall
Street Journal reported that the average executive loses 6 weeks a year
retrieving misplaced information from messy desks and files. At $1000.00 a
week you lose $6,000.00 a year.
FACT: 11% of work
time is wasted searching for misplaced, misfiled or mislaid items.
Clutter
could be costing your company thousands of dollars a year. These costs are
escalated by not only lost time, but by not getting back to a client or
prospect on time, not sending information as promised and not returning phone
calls. Many of these costs could be avoided if management recognized the value
of the time and investment necessary to have more efficient paper flow
systems. Less clutter cuts down on stress related illness, resulting in less
sick time, and improving your bottom line.
A marketing consultant, at an international investment firm, who experienced
my 3
Hour Transformation sent me the following email:
“Thanks so much for helping me get the clutter under control in my office. It
has made such a difference in my productivity.”
Make 2008 the year you become more profitable, invest in clutter control. The
benefits are: less mess, less stress; increased productivity, and saves
$$$$$$$.
Clutter is more than paper piles and congested files. It’s also those
day-to-day details that clutter your mind. Get Your Mind Out of the Clutter!
And start thinking more about the future of your business.
MYTH: Your home can
look picture perfect.
FACT: You can have practical organizing systems that suit your lifestyle.
People expect their home to look like the photos in the home decorating
magazines. It is unrealistic to think that your home will always look picture
perfect.
People think if I only had a bigger house, it would be neat. Organizing is
about systems, not about space.
The two areas that get the most cluttered are the entry way and the kitchen.
If people enter directly into your kitchen you need to create an entry zone.
Do your kids drop their jackets and backpacks on the floor in the entry way
when they come in? Is that where your tote bag and laptop land?
This area needs to be organized to suit the needs of the people who live in
the home. For example, kids would rather hang their jackets and backpacks on
hooks than in a closet. Hooks should be low enough for toddlers and young
children to reach them. There are many products on the market to help organize
this area.
Don’t know where to start? Ask about our Product Research Service or you can
send me
digital photos of the area and then schedule a Telephone Consult for the
solutions.
Are your mail and the kid’s school papers strewn across your kitchen counter?
School papers, summaries from insurance companies, investment reports, and
bank statements often end up in a big pile, or worse lost in bags. If this
happens to you, you need a mail processing system.
Guidelines
for clearing the clutter in your home: Start in one corner of each room and
work your way around the room. As you look at each item, ask yourself: When
was the last time I used this? Do I love it? Do I need it? Is it worth the
space that it is taking up?
Create three categories: Save, Give Away, and Throw Away. Once you have made
your decision, take the necessary action.
Individuals
who don’t prioritize the time to clear the clutter in their homes end up
spending more time looking for things and suffer from stress related
illnesses. Walking into a cluttered home causes stress as soon as you come
through the door. An organized home can be an oasis of calm in a chaotic
world.
Good luck!
